Teams: Audio Settings & Troubleshooting
Overview
If you encounter audio problems during a meeting or call, be sure to verify that the correct audio output (speaker) and input (microphone) are selected in the app (see below). Teams and Zoom have audio and camera settings that can be configured independently from other applications or the main system settings.
In addition, you can check your general Windows system audio settings by right-clicking on the speaker icon in the lower right corner of your desktop and choosing Open Sound Settings
Selecting a device
For your microphone and speakers in Zoom and Teams, you can choose to match the devices set in the main Windows settings/toolbar or pick a different device just for that application. Zoom and Teams can have audio device defaults that are independent of each other and the main Windows settings, so you can mix and match as you see fit.
Your laptop's built-in microphone and speakers are labeled as either Realtek or Conexant, depending on the hardware in your laptop.
During a meeting
Outside of a meeting
You can leverage the Make a test call feature to test your microphone and speaker settings if desired
Troubleshooting
No sound
- Verify the volume level in your system settings. Is it low or muted?
- Dragging the volume level left or right should produce a sound to help you determine what level you want
- Verify the system default speakers & microphone
- Microphone icon only shows in toolbar when an application is trying to use it
- Reboot the computer and then test the audio again
- If the speaker icon has a red X on it, contact IT for assistance
Sound quality issues
- Go to the Teams Device Settings (as shown in the During a meeting section above)
- Verify that Automatically adjust mic sensitivity is enabled
- In most cases, auto is the best option for Noise suppression
- Check to see if there are any updates available
- Teams: ... (More) > Check for updates - it will take a few minutes to check and install any updates
- Windows: System Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates > install available updates
- If the above fails, contact IT for further troubleshooting. Your computer may need the audio drivers reinstalled
