How to Self-Approve Device in Bitwarden

How to Self-Approve Device in Bitwarden

Important Note:

For your first login to Bitwarden, we recommend doing it through the browser first, NOT the extension. This will ensure you have access to the tools to use self-approvals.
Access the browser version of Bitwarden here: Bitwarden Vault Webpage

Getting Started

If you haven't created your Bitwarden account yet, go ahead and open up the Bitwarden webpage for the vault: Bitwarden Vault Webpage

When the page is open, go ahead and enter in your Abdo email and click "Use single sign-on". This will always be how you log into Bitwarden.

That will bring you to the familiar Abdo single sign-on page where you sign in with your cloud credentials. Go ahead and sign into your account.
Note: After setting up Bitwarden, you will need to change your cloud password to something you can remember because this log in process will require you to memorize your password to use single sign-on to log into Bitwarden everytime. You can do that here: Microsoft/Cloud Password Reset

Once you successfully log in through single sign-on and enter your Bitwarden vault, you can proceed to set up your Chrome Extension, which will require the next steps!

Device Approval Required

One of the key security features of bitwarden is device approval. This will pop up when you are setting up the Chrome extension or setting it up on a different browser/device. The prompt looks like this:

This feature ensures that only approved devices can access your bitwarden vault, and the contents therein.
Bitwarden requires this process as a security measure so it considers any new browser or extension as another device and if it detects that you haven't logged into your Bitwarden through it yet. Generally, you will only need to approve it once, but sometimes if you have other browsers with Bitwarden open, it might ask twice in one sitting.

Here is a quick guide to self-approve the extension and any other device you want to approve.

Self-Approving Your Device

Go ahead and keep “Remember this device” checked and click “Approve from your other device”. Once you get prompted with a fingerprint phase(example below is blurred out in white but it’s the purple letters), like this, you can continue the next steps.

First you’ll want to log into Bitwarden through the website, preferably on the device you originally set up Bitwarden on and you’ll land on the default page displaying your vaults and items, for example:

Go ahead and open up “Settings” to on the left side navigation bar and click on “Security” to open up the security page. Click on “Devices” and you’ll see each device, either trusted or needing your pending approval. You can find their status under “Login status” and you’ll see “Request pending”.

Go ahead and click on the device that needs your approval and confirm the approval with “Confirm access”.

Great! That device is now approved and should update that it is now a trusted device or the "Needs approval" text under the device will just simply disappear. For any future logins on different devices, this interface is where you’ll be able to self-approve them.
